Microsoft seems to be learning from its mistakes, and that's always a good thing. They might have botched the Windows 7 download, pushing us towards torrents, and the early Windows 8 downloads were riddled with problems. However, it's easy to download Windows 10 as an ISO, including the 1511 update.
You can use this guide to download Windows 10 ISOs in Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
Can I do a clean Windows 10 install using this ISO?
With the update 1511, it is now possible to do a clean install of Windows 10 with a Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product keys.
Before the November update, a clean Windows 10 installation was unnecessarily convoluted.
The 1511 update is integrated into the ISOs below; there is no need to install it separately.
How to download Windows 10 ISO in Windows
To download Windows 10, we just need to visit
and click on the "Download tool now" button halfway through the page.
After the tool downloads, we just run it.
If we want, we can use to tool to upgrade our current PC, regardless if we "reserved" Windows 10 or not.
For this guide, however, we will just download Windows 10 as an ISO, so we select "Create installation media for another PC".
The tool will automatically select the options from our existing Windows installation.
Of course, we can always uncheck the "Use the recommended options for this PC" to download Windows 10 with a different language, edition, or architecture.
Finally, we choose whether we want to download Windows 10 straight at a USB Flash drive or as an ISO.
The ISO is the most flexible solution because we can write it on a DVD or USB anytime we want.
After that, we just wait for the download to finish.
After the download, the tool will even check the integrity of the ISO, to make sure there was no corruption. Because few things are worse than a corrupted Windows installation ISO when we need it.
That's how we download Windows 10 ISOs from Windows.
Download Windows 10 ISOs in Linux and Mac OS X
Microsoft didn't use to care about Linux and Mac OS X users. They made it impossible to download Windows 8.1 from a non-windows machine because they only offered a Media Creation Tool as a ".exe" file, which wouldn't run on any other platform.
With Windows 10, however, Microsoft has changed its tune. It is now easy to download Windows 10 ISOs in both Linux and Mac OS X.
We just visit the same page as we would through Windows.
This time, however, we won't find a useless media creation tool. We can straight up download Windows 10 through our browser.
First we select the edition.
The N edition is the European edition, which doesn't include Windows Media Player, Camera, Music, Movies & TV, or Skype preinstalled.
The KN version is like the N, but for South Korea. Its difference from N is that it includes download links for an alternative media player.
Then, we select the language.
Finally, we get two links to download Windows 10, valid for 24 hours.
From the file name, it is apparent that the update 1511 is integrated into the ISO.
The procedure is identical for Mac OS X.
Is there a way to download Windows 10 as an insider?
It is easy to download Windows 10 ISO for a retail version or an upgrade. However, Microsoft seems to have dropped the ball regarding the insider versions.
If we go to the end of the page we used above, and click on More options, there is a "Visit the Windows Insider site" link.
Clicking on it, though, will redirect us back to the same page, without any different options. It is probably a mistake that Microsoft hasn't come around to fix yet.
For the time being, there doesn't seem to be a way to download Windows 10 as an insider.
